The problem

The NAATI CCL test is a migration gateway for tens of thousands of people in Australia — it is worth points on a skilled visa, and failing it is expensive. But practising for it is genuinely hard: you need a partner to read dialogues aloud, you need to interpret under time pressure, and you need someone who knows the marking rubric to tell you where you lost marks. Most candidates had none of those things. They practised alone, guessing.

What we built

A browser-based platform that plays a dialogue segment by segment, gives you five seconds after the chime to interpret, records you, and then scores your attempt against the NAATI deduction model — the same way a real examiner marks it.

  • Nine languages — Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada
  • Segment-by-segment dialogue playback with the five-second interpreting window
  • AI scoring mapped to the official NAATI deduction rubric, not a generic correctness score
  • Twelve domains — health, legal, immigration, education, financial, housing and more
  • Readiness score, progress tracking, day streaks and an exam countdown planner
  • Free tier plus a paid unlock — real payments, real subscription handling
  • Mock tests under exam conditions

The interesting part

Scoring is the whole product, and scoring interpreting is not a solved problem. A word-for-word comparison is useless — interpreting is not translation, and a correct interpretation can use entirely different words. The rubric deducts for omissions, distortions and additions, weighted by severity. Getting the AI to grade against that — rather than against a reference transcript — was the actual engineering, and it is what makes the tool worth using instead of practising into a mirror.
